Programs and Initiatives

NOWEMPA runs several programs aimed at improving the lives of women, girls, and children in
refugee and host communities. These programs focus on building resilience, fostering gender
equality, and creating opportunities for sustainable growth.

1. Women’s Livelihood and Entrepreneurship Program (WLEP).
To provide women in Nakivale and Oruchinga with skills and resources to improve their
livelihoods, NOWEMPA provides vocational training in tailoring, agriculture, crafts, and smallscale business management. The program also includes financial literacy and access to savings
and loan groups to help women start and expand their businesses.

2. Girls’ Education and Empowerment Initiative.
To increase access to education for girls and create a supportive learning environment,
NOWEMPA offers mentorship programs that encourage girls to pursue their education.
NOWEMPA also distributes menstrual hygiene products to reduce school absenteeism among girls.

3. Women’s Health and Well-being Program.
To improve access to healthcare for women and children, focusing on maternal and child health,
NOWEMPA provides health education sessions, support for prenatal and postnatal care, and
access to essential health services such as immunization and nutrition programs. NOWEMPA
works with local health centers to improve healthcare access for women and children.

4. Gender Equality and Women’s Rights Advocacy.
To advocate for gender equality and the protection of women’s rights in refugee and host
communities, NOWEMPA conducts community awareness campaigns on women’s rights,
gender equality, and prevention of gender-based violence. NOWEMPA also engages with
community leaders to promote policies that support women and girls.

5. Sustainable Livelihoods Program.
To support women in building sustainable livelihoods through agriculture, handicrafts, and small
business development, NOWEMPA trains women in sustainable farming techniques, linking
them to markets, and creating cooperatives to enhance their economic opportunities.
NOWEMPA also promotes environmentally friendly practices to ensure long-term sustainability.

6. Child Protection and Development Initiative.
To ensure the safety, well-being, and development of children in refugee and host communities,
NOWEMPA provides safe spaces for children to learn and play, offering psychosocial support to
children affected by trauma, and promoting early childhood education. NOWEMPA works with
families and schools to protect children’s rights and ensure their healthy development.
